Design and Demonstration of a Heat Exchanger for a Compact Natural Gas Compressor
As natural gas is compressed, the temperature increases significantly and must be cooled before it can be processed further. Current heat exchangers for this application are large and inefficient. The goal of this project was to design a more efficient and compact heat exchanger to be used in conjunction with OsComp\u27s rotary, positive-displacement natural gas compressor. The design incorporated heat pipes as a means to improve the efficiency of the overall heat transfer. The design has a total footprint of 0.871 m^2, which is 21.5% smaller than an industry standard heat exchanger of the same specification (1.1 m^2). To demonstrate the feasibility of a heat-pipe forced convection cooler; a scaled-down test stand was manufactured and tested

Displacement design response spectrum is an essential component for the currently-developing displacement-based seismic design and assessment procedures. This paper proposes a new and simple method for constructing displacement design response spectra on soft soil sites. The method takes into account modifications of the seismic waves by the soil layers, giving due considerations to factors such as the level of bedrock shaking, material non-linearity, seismic impedance contrast at the interface between soil and bedrock, and plasticity of the soil layers. The model is particularly suited to applications in regions with a paucity of recorded strong ground motion data, from which empirical models cannot be reliably developed
Immunofluorescence Assay for Serologic Diagnosis of SARS
We evaluated a virus-infected cell-based indirect immunofluorescence assay for detecting anti–severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody. All confirmed SARS cases demonstrated seroconversion or fourfold rise in IgG antibody titer; no control was positive. Sensitivity and specificity of this assay were both 100%. Immunofluorescence assay can ascertain the status of SARS-CoV infection
Coherent state quantization of a particle in de Sitter space
We present a coherent state quantization of the dynamics of a relativistic
test particle on a one-sheet hyperboloid embedded in a three-dimensional
Minkowski space. The group SO_0(1,2) is considered to be the symmetry group of
the system. Our procedure relies on the choice of coherent states of the motion
on a circle. The coherent state realization of the principal series
representation of SO_0(1,2) seems to be a new result.Comment: Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, vol. 37, in pres
Tribimaximal Neutrino Mixing and a Relation Between Neutrino- and Charged Lepton-Mass Spectra
Brannen has recently pointed out that the observed charged lepton masses
satisfy the relation m_e +m_\mu +m_\tau = {2/3}
(\sqrt{m_e}+\sqrt{m_\mu}+\sqrt{m_\tau})^2, while the observed neutrino masses
satisfy the relation m_{\nu 1} +m_{\nu 2} +m_{\nu 3} = {2/3} (-\sqrt{m_{\nu
1}}+\sqrt{m_{\nu 2}}+\sqrt{m_{\nu 3}})^2. It is discussed what neutrino Yukawa
interaction form is favorable if we take the fact pointed out by Brannen
seriously.Comment: 13 pages, presentation modifie
Precision Measurement of the Mass Difference
We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting , significantly more precise than the previous
world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the
vector-pseudoscalar mass difference using the radiative
decay , obtaining
. This is
then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of
, which used the decay . We also
measure the mass difference MeV, using the
decay modes of the and mesons.Comment: 18 pages uuencoded compressed postscript (process with uudecode then

Cosmological Bound on the Decay
Using the upper bound on the effective number of light neutrino species
during primordial nucleosynthesis and the cosmological pion-pole mechanism
, we obtain an upper limit
on the branching ratio for the decay BR, where is any long-lived weakly interacting neutral vector
particle with mass smaller than the neutral pion mass.Comment: 7 pages, IP-ASTP-03-9
Semileptonic Branching Fraction of Charged and Neutral B Mesons
An examination of leptons in events tagged by reconstructed
decays yields semileptonic branching fractions of for charged and for neutral mesons.
This is the first measurement for charged . Assuming equality of the charged
and neutral semileptonic widths, the ratio is
equivalent to the ratio of lifetimes. A postscript version is available through

Variational quantum Monte Carlo study of two-dimensional Wigner crystals: exchange, correlation, and magnetic field effects
The two-dimensional Wigner crystals are studied with the variational quantum
Monte Carlo method. The close relationship between the ground-state
wavefunction and the collective excitations in the system is illustrated, and
used to guide the construction of the ground-state wavefunction of the strongly
correlated solid. Exchange, correlation, and magnetic field effects all give
rise to distinct physical phenomena. In the absence of any external magnetic
field, interesting spin-orderings are observed in the ground-state of the
electron crystal in various two-dimensional lattices. In particular,
two-dimensional bipartite lattices are shown not to lead necessarily to an
antiferromagnetic ground-state. In the quantum Hall effect regime, a strong
magnetic field introduces new energy and length scales. The magnetic field
quenches the kinetic energy and poses constraints on how the electrons may
correlate with each other. Care is taken to ensure the appropriate
translational properties of the wavefunction when the system is in a uniform
magnetic field. We have examined the exchange, intra-Landau-level correlation
as well as Landau-level-mixing effects with various variational wavefunctions.
We also determine their dependences on the experimental parameters such as the
carrier effective mass at a modulation-doped semiconductor heterojunction. Our
results, when combined with some recent calculations for the energy of the
fractional quantum Hall liquid including Landau-level-mixing, show
quantitatively that in going from -doping to -doping in
heterojunction systems, the crossover filling factor from the fractional
quantum Hall liquid to the Wigner crystal changes from filling factor to . This lends strong support to the claim that theComment: LaTex file, 14 figures available from [email protected]
